Indigo Alive · App Prototype
Shibori is a Japanese word for several methods of dyeing cloth with a pattern. Fabric is folded, twisted, pleated or bound — then dipped in natural indigo dye. Only the unbound areas absorb the color, creating unique patterns that can never be exactly reproduced.
Natural indigo dyeing is 100% biodegradable. The Sanxia workshop uses under-forest grown indigo plants (Strobilanthes formosanus) as part of a certified sustainable ecosystem. Peace Island Geopark holds ISO 20121 certification for sustainable tourism.
Chen Wei has been practicing indigo dyeing since 1989, learning the ancient Sanxia technique from his father. He has dedicated his life to preserving this nearly lost craft and training young apprentices.
